The numbers continue inching up with 52 new cases of Influenza A (H1N1) confirmed here, the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported yesterday. This brings the total to 1,055 confirmed cases.
But even though the number of cases crossed the 1,000 mark over the weekend, MOH reiterated "the current strain remains mild, except for high-risk individuals". Most patients respond well to treatment, but those with underlying medical conditions could face complications.
The ministry signalled on Friday it would soon stop listing countries with reported H1N1 cases since many no longer track the number of infected cases.
And starting today, students and school staff with travel history to affected countries no longer need to take a Leave of Absence, said the Ministry of Education (MOE). But some schools will continue with containment measures. For instance, Republic Polytechnic (RP) will still check students to make sure they have their thermometers when they enter the campus.
RP, which was hit with the largest H1N1 cluster, will also continue segregating students for break times and lunch hours, with the first-, second- and third-year students put into time zones. Security officers will help ensure the students are all back in their classes before those from the next level are allowed to take their breaks.
At Dunman High school, quarantine measures for its boarders will be removed from today, said its principal Sng Chern Wei. However, it will continue to stagger meal breaks for its 500 boarders. ALICIA WONG
