ONE OF the big lessons from the Mumbai terror attacks last November was that inept handling of media coverage could cripple response efforts. So kudos to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) for the unprecedented move of roping in the media as role-players in one of the Exercise Northstar VII scenarios.
Our brief: To "stress test" the officers in the aftermath of the early-morning carnage wrought by three gunmen armed with automatic weapons at Siloso beach.
We were to stretch these officers' information management skills to the limits. We were free to fish for details by all means necessary: Assail them with questions, trying to sneak behind police cordons ... In short, police-media rules were thrown out the window.
How well did the SPF handle this news-gathering frenzy?
The aim of the exercise, according to assistant director of operations planning Superintendent Devrajan Bala, was to find out how to work with the media in managing similar future situations. So, in that spirit, here are some suggestions.
- Describe the crisis accurately. A police spokesperson told reporters that after their rampage, the gunmen had fled to nearby hotel Rasa Sentosa.
The situation, he added, was "under control" and hotel guests were not being evacuated as they were "not in imminent danger".
Considering that the three armed men at large had just left a trail of 10 dead and 20 injured, this statement was hard to swallow. Would you find it reassuring, if you were a guest wondering if you might end up as a terrorist's hostage?
If the police have reason to be confident of keeping the public out of harm's way, they could be more forthcoming with explanations without compromising operations. If the aim was to prevent panic, well, wouldn't this rate as a situation where knowing the danger is better than not knowing?
- Keep the public updated, ASAP. While the assault on Sentosa was taking place, other groups of terrorists were to have launched attacks in downtown areas.
In such a situation, it would seem best to disseminate as much information as possible in real time updates, so that the public has timelywarning.
A police spokesperson yesterday did not provide any other details beyond confirming that other locations were hit. There was no advisory for people to keep away from these areas - a critical precaution, one would think.
- Share details, tap the public. Sure, information such as where the terrorists could be hiding out cannot be made public for obvious security reasons. But details that will not thwart security agencies' operations - how the terrorists came into the country, the status of the injured, for example - are things the public would want to know.
It might even prompt eyewitnesses to come forward with crucial leads in the manhunt. Think of how the public was given details and pictures of Mas Selamat Kastari, ensuring more eyes and ears on the ground.
All this being said, the officers managing the incident site acted professionally throughout - even when we "naughty" journalists (as one officer later quipped) ignored all protocol - I slipped past the cordon into the attack site to speak to survivors. The officer who hustled me away was never rude.
It is also a mark of how vital media-police dynamics can be in such situations, that the SPF will hold a review after Exercise Northstar VII concludes on July 15, to get the media's feedback on yesterday's exercise.

MARRIED BUT KEEPING SEPARATE BEDS
No, there's no marital strife as Christopher Lee shares how he and Fann keep the sparks flying
YOU'D think that less than two months into their marriage, Christopher Lee and Fann Wong would behave like most newly-wed couples.

You know, spend hours in the bedroom, then wake up making googoo eyes at each other and other numbing activities like that.
But surprise, surprise, Chris and Fann - married for a mere 11/2 months don't even live together.
Yes, at the end of the day, they go home to their separate apartments, purportedly in the same condominium.
Welcome to marriage, Singapore-style.
Chris and Fann, both 38, may have registered their marriage on 16 May, but they have not held their customary Chinese wedding rites.
That doesn't mean Chris is not spending time with his 'baby', his affectionate nickname for Fann.
He confessed to me that he and his wife have been getting all hot and sweaty during their clandestine afternoon rendezvous.
He even revealed that glamour queen Fann looks just as gorgeous dripping with perspiration.
Never mind it's related to their latest addiction of playing badminton in deserted community centres.
We are expecting flushed faces when the couple spend nights at each other's apartments after their wedding rites in September.

For now, goody Fann lives with mum and pop, and Chris' grandma, mum and younger brother occasionally travel from Malacca to stay with him.
Yeah, bummer.
So how do the couple 'cosy up' when her parents are out in the living room?
Chris snorted: 'Her parents are not so boh liao (bored in Hokkien) to eavesdrop through the bedroom door! They are probably more loving than us, ha ha ha!'
Fairy-tale marriage
So while they have no intention on buying a love nest in Singapore because 'property prices are too high', the couple are thinking of buying a home in Beijing since they fly there for work so often.
You can practically hear the birds singing as he talked about this fairy-tale marriage.
They will manja (act coy in Malay) each other though Fann's better at it.
She asks him every day if he wants to play badminton with her.
But it's not all a bed of roses.

Chris revealed that the couple have their fair share of quarrels.
He said: 'We used to fight because we are both so stubborn. Now, we just don't speak to each other for the whole day.'
During these cold wars, they contemplate, but kiss and make up the next day.
But he insists they are 'very happy' most of the time.
Though the naughty couple love leading Fann's parents into thinking that they are fighting again.
Chris said: 'Fann's mum gets quite anxious when she sees us giving each other the cold shoulder and would try to calm the situation.
'So sometimes, just out of fun, we pretend to fight and see how her parents react. It's quite funny to leave her home lovey dovey and then return in few minutes shooting barbs at each other!'
Humph. That's what you get for having children who are actors.
Chris even confided: 'It took me more than a week to call Fann's parents 'mum' and 'dad'.
'Fann joked that I should be fined every time I call them 'auntie' and 'uncle'.'

But he was quick to add that both families are chummy with one another.
The couple even hope to have everyone living together in the future.
But perhaps they should try living under the same roof themselves first?
In the meantime, though, Chris won't have much time to spend with his 'baby' in the upcoming weeks.
His wedding ring, a teeny band of platinum on his left ring finger, reminds him of his responsibilities to bring home the bacon.
And da man is now working on his new movie, Kidnapper, directed by Rule #1's Kelvin Tong.
(With one wedding dinner in Singapore for at least 1,000 guests and another dinner in Malacca - on top of the Teochew custom of giving the bride four gold jewellery items - God knows he needs the money!)
Playing undoubtedly the most handsome cabby in Singapore in the movie, he will have more than 100 weepy scenes after his screen son gets abducted by a rogue played by Malaysian actor-DJ Jack Lim.

And for all that effort, precocious child actor Gerald Tan (aka the young Tay Ping Hui in Channel 8's The Ultimatum) thinks Chris is only 'okay-looking'.
But no worries, there's a warm bosom to come home to after much blubbering on set.
Chris confided happily that the wife, in Singapore for a break until next month, teases and gives him a big hug every time he comes home with puffy eyes.
And when Fann has had an exhausting day of filming crying scenes, Chris would sayang (cuddle in Malay) her and take her out for a good meal to 'replenish her energy'.
But Fann didn't used to be so welcoming though.
Chris said: 'She used to push me away because the prickly hairs on my beard and moustache hurt her.
'Now that the hairs are longer, it isn't painful for her anymore. She thinks it looks good on me too!'
He is even now considering keeping that facial fluff for their big day on 29 Sep.
All would depend on his wedding suit, he said, which he hasn't seen yet.
Just as long as he doesn't mind looking like a old scruffy uncle next to the ever-youthful Fann.
LOVE STORY
1996 - Christopher Lee and Fann Wong act together for the first time in the Channel 8 drama Brave New World.
1999 - Fann breaks up with her businessman boyfriend but not before slapping him outside Zouk after spotting him with another woman.
Aug 2001 - Chris and Fann are spotted holding hands while on vacation in Bali.

Why are broadcast regulators allowing so many rape scenes in local TV dramas?

STOMPer Rony Ang is appalled that there are so many rape scenes in local TV dramas Red Thread and Fighting Spiders. Shouldn't broadcast regulators censor these scenes to protect our children, says the concerned STOMPer.
In an email to STOMP today (June 24), the STOMPer says:
“I am quite disturbed by the many rape scenes on our home TV programmes. I see that happening on Red Thread, and I also see that happening on a show that’s supposedly good for our children, Fighting Spiders.
“Is this necessary? I am not saying that rapes do not happen in real life, but children are simply too young to understand what they see.
“Are producers trying to prepare our children for such horrible things? Are they brainwashing them by saying that rape is so common that they should just simply ‘move on’ when it happens?
“If producers are not concerned about protecting our children, shouldn’t our regulators censor these scenes before it's put on TV?”

女艺人上夜店被占便宜经验
莫小玲夜店被非礼，惊震娱乐圈；圈中多名女艺人都表示也曾在夜店遭异性的挑逗！
权怡凤被咸猪手 男友出头打人 全部闹上警局
权怡凤说，已经十多年没去夜店玩，不过她记得当年遭新传媒辞退“流落街头”，开卡拉OK酒廊时，曾发生过被人咸猪手事件，最后还搞上警局。
“当时我在bar台后面，这个男人就摸了我的手一下，然后我去厕所出来，走廊很窄，碰到对方，我下意识挡着自己的胸，他就贴着挤过去。这个男的原来 有女朋友在场，当时我的男友就跑去质问他有没有非礼我，他开始骂粗话，我男友就‘啪’一拳打下去他眼睛，最后全部上警局录口供。”怡凤说，夜店人挤难免会 肢体碰撞，加上酒精作祟，很多人会肉麻当有趣。
问她酒量如何？
“烂！我一口（酒）就醉了！整个脸会红得像番茄那样，哈哈哈。
黄慧上厕所 女同志挡路
黄慧说，她如果去夜店玩，自我保护意识都会很强，也会做一些基本防范措施。“我只穿裤子不穿裙子，也不会过于性感、太低胸和暴露的服装，也不会穿高 跟鞋。”黄慧说，夜店里很拥挤，人与人的碰撞很自然，不过她也只跟自己相熟的朋友搂抱，更不允许自己在夜店里喝醉，让一些“醉翁之意不在酒”的人有机可 乘。
“一些男生会越跳越近，或挤过来跳跟你说话之类的，不过我防备心很强，会用手挡着胸前。”黄慧还透露，自己一次去夜店玩还碰到女同志在厕所挡路，直接向她示爱。“我当时开始就觉得对方的眼神很奇怪，然后她就跟我进厕所。厕所和很小，她就挡在门口不让我出去，然后直接问我是否是同志，想跟我‘做朋友’，我起 初有点害怕，但也很谢谢她的欣赏，拒绝了她。她的态度很友善，可是我不是同志。”黄慧也笑言自己酒量不错，连灌5杯烈酒都面不改色。
洋汉故意贴近 扫背邀舞
郭蕙雯很少去夜店，即使去，也是与好友同行。
她说：“总会遇到男人上来搭讪。我不喜欢跳舞，都是站在吧台或是柱子旁听音乐，有一些男人会故意越凑越近，乘机跟我讲话。”
令她很不舒服的一次是，有一洋佬一上前就用手扫她的背，假意问她：“怎么不去跳舞？来吧...”
遇到这种情况，她都会掉头就走：“我不想闹大，宁愿静静走开，只要对方不是袭我的胸或摸我的臀部，我不会怎么样。”
如果是对方越“雷池”，摸到她的敏部位，她说：“我会毫不犹豫报警，甚至还会打人。”
当然，她也遇过被洋人借故握住玉手不放。“有一次，是一个外籍华人，他借故越跳越近，几乎是贴了上来。当时，我在舞池旁与朋友聊天，没想到他在后贴了上来。”机警的朋友见状，马上就把她拉开。李铭顺剪小平头拍婚照 获文芳支持
李铭顺最近刚投入唐永健惊悚电影《绑匪》拍摄，昨天蓄着胡子与小平头亮相，他说：“虽然结婚照还没拍，但文芳支持我剪小平头。这个造型对电影有帮助，以工作为优先。”他说发型师颜天发届时会根据这个短发，来设计他的婚照造型。
李铭顺在《绑》中原是留着较长的头发，但为了让片中的德士司机角色更有说服力，才剪了小平头。他也是第一次为戏留胡子，很喜欢目前的新造型。
他表明与文芳想过到日本或欧洲拍结婚照：“但还是得看能不能挪出时间。”
李铭顺赞郭蕙雯“进步很多”
《绑》中李铭顺有个9岁至10岁的儿子，他不介意有个那么大的孩子：“我过了30岁以后，就可以接受演爸爸。本地市场小，艺人的机会不多，若自我限 制这个不可演，那个不可演，会失去许多机会。”他与第一女主角郭妃丽有多场对手戏，反而与戏中的太太只有几场：“她只是客串，我还不知道她是谁。”
谈到终于熬成第一女主角的另一女星郭蕙雯，李铭顺说：“她已走了一段路，能胜任女主角，我在《仙人掌》与她合作过，这回再度合作，她进步很多。”
李铭顺在《绑匪》与将推出的电视剧《难兄烂弟》都饰演草根的角色，出席记者会，他满头黑白发穿插，流露出成熟男性的魅力，他打趣说：“草根的角色比较颓废，我轻松得很，白发都不必染。”
郑各评靠保养装“小”
他在《难》中演冷气工人，与死党郑各评因故反目。40多岁的郑各评越来越有魅力，身材好，演技好，名气也越来越红，两人在《难》都是第一男主角。各评这号熟男的崛起是不是给他很大压力？顺哥说：“不会，多几个性格男星，编剧写剧本也更好发挥。”
郑各评说现实中有不少“烂兄”朋友，他们最常的问题是借钱，他的数万元有借无还：“现在学乖了，不借了！”他在现实中较顺哥大好几岁，《难》中反比他小，他说自己还特地去美容院保养一番。
朱厚任与陈丽贞是记者会上最幽默的艺人，顺哥的角色叫“有权”，各评叫“英磅”，林晓佩叫“美金”，厚任说：“这部戏很精彩，有英磅、美金和有权，一定要看。”剧中性感，还唱《热情的沙漠》的陈丽贞则说：“剧中有老娘在，其他人都凶不起来！”
《难兄烂弟》下个月8日起，每逢星期一至五晚上9时在8频道播映。

莫小玲前天凌晨在酒廊遭“非礼”，新闻还未曝光前，曾在电视剧中跟她搭档的郑各评已听闻。昨午出席《难兄烂弟》记者会的郑各评接受本报访问时透露：“她是个有魅力的女人，她的翘臀是东方女性中少见的！”
郑各评说一听到消息时，先关心她被摸到哪个部位：“小玲的腿与臀部最美，男人很难抵抗。”他说小玲很爱去喝酒，他与慧芳曾与她一起上夜店：“有时我们自己去，也会遇到她，通常有一班女性朋友陪她去，她酒量很不错。”他说自己还未打电话慰问小玲：“等一下有空会打给她。”

在非礼罪名下遭逮捕的男子已获保释外出。警方在接受本报记者的查询时证实，22日凌晨接获求救电话，抵达后，以非礼罪将一名31岁华裔男子逮捕以协助调查。传闻该男子是新传媒艺人陈汉玮的朋友，陈汉玮回应媒体：“有这样的事吗？我去问问朋友。”
《抢摊大行动2》惊吓连连
主持新一系列的《抢摊大行动2》，钟琴透露内容：“惊吓连连。”另一主持人权怡凤则说：“很真实，可看到节目中的人真正成功与失败的原因，还有人的悲欢离合。”她也说每一集虽拍4天，但一个摊位得跟3个月，几摊交错跟拍，是相当辛苦的一个节目。
本地电视剧被指强暴戏太多了 家长大表不满
黄金时段电视剧一再出现强奸画面，引起家长深表关注，担心对孩子造成不良影响。
家长指出，最近正在播映的3部电视剧，全部都出现强奸戏码，而且画面不是一闪而过，镜头都放大强调受害者脸部的痛苦表情，令家长看了很担心，甚至禁止孩子观看。
家长所指的这3部电视剧，包括8频道播映的重头剧《双子星》、5频道播映的《红线》（Red Thread）和《斗蜘蛛》（Fighting Spiders）。
在《双子星》中，由陈雪儿饰演的年轻孕妇被强奸，她后来生下由郑惠玉饰演的叶予晨。而在同剧中，饰演男人婆孙敏的陈靓瑄，被3个人蹂躏，不但被打得遍体鳞伤，而且身心受创，近乎崩溃。
拼收视率 尺寸放宽？
张玉华在《红线》里饰演富家女，李之仪在《斗蜘蛛》中饰演音乐家，两人同样被强奸。
一名家长上网反映：“《斗蜘蛛》不是适合小孩子看的戏吗？竟然也出现强暴画面。孩子还小，似懂非懂。这些画面可能灌输不正确的价值观，让小孩以为强暴是常见的、可以接受的。”
家长认为，这些电视剧都在黄金时段播出，现在又是学校假期，很多家庭都是一家大小一起看电视，他认为很不妥。
另外，有网友指出，之前创下高收视率的《小娘惹》，剧中白薇秀就因惨遭强奸，成为《红星大奖》的影后，家长担心一些电视剧为了拼收视率而尺寸会越来越宽。
辅导员：
孩子会有阴影 甚至有样学样
辅导员表示，电视剧的画面可能影响孩子的身心发展，孩子甚至可能有样学样。
翱翔辅导服务心理与家庭辅导师应黎虹受访时表示，小孩子如果观看这些画面，确实有可能受到负面的影响。
她指出，电视中不乏暴力与残酷画面，一些孩子的心里可能产生阴影。此外，一些孩子甚至可能有样学样，效仿剧中人物的所谓。
她表示，小孩子对这些画面似懂非懂，因此在这个时候家长应该从旁辅助，减低电视暴力所造成的负面影响。
她指出，电视是大众传播，谁都可以看，因此她建议改善电视条例，让这些不适合小孩子观看的电视剧分级，列为“家长辅导级”节目。
“以前的电视剧通常是一个镜头带过，如今的电视剧却比较露骨，残暴画面越来越长，确实不太适合小孩子观看。”
博客女星杨蔼慧：
‘我从电视剧中 学会性爱教育’
本地博客女星杨蔼慧透露，她年少时从电视剧中学会性爱教育。
杨霭慧（Dawn Yang）在博客上透露，她小时候是通过8频道的电视剧了解什么是性爱。
她说，当时电视剧中的男女主角，亲吻后躺在床上，摄影镜头接着拍摄屋内一些无关痛痒的画面，不久后女主角就会泪流满面地像男主角说：“我有了！”
她表示，小孩子不笨，看多了就会明白这是怎么一回事。
“不要低估流行文化对小孩子价值观的影响力。现在的小孩在电视、电影、网络等传媒中，接触各种层次的性爱意识，他们太容易接触这些露骨的内容，这是大家值得关注的问题。

莫小玲遭男子非礼 报警抓人
涉嫌的31岁男子是谁？受访的圈内人怎么说？看今天《联合晚报》。
“是非女王”莫小玲昨天凌晨到位于克拉码头的某夜店狂欢，岂料中途遭到酒醉男子非礼，莫小玲被触碰到敏感部位。莫小玲怒而报警，警方在凌晨3时20分左右抵达现场，逮捕一名31岁华籍男子！
一名不愿透露姓名的现场目击者向《晚报》描述整个事件的发生过程。目击者也说，莫小玲其实给了该男子两次机会离开。后来，她发现男子还在现场，于是上前与他对峙，两人大吵起来。
莫小玲后来拨电向警方求救，警方在凌晨3时20分左右抵达，将男子逮捕。
莫小玲证实已经报警
记者联络上莫小玲，她说：“我已经报警了，是police case了。我不会再多说什么，你们去问警方吧！”说罢便放下电话，对非礼风波详情不愿多谈。
